Chiloé, Southern Chile: Lakes, Forests and Volcanoes

dsc04086Kawell Product The trip begins in Chiloé, the largest island of Chile located in the area of the big lakes. Chiloé presents sumptuous landscapes, a strange harmony between water and ground. The oceanic, fresh and wet climate, allowed the development of a rich wooded vegetation. Not only because of its insular geography but also because of the cultural characteristics which distinguish Chilotes from the inhabitants of the continent, the island is famous for its original traditions and its picturesque villages. The churches of Chiloé, registered as world heritage of humanity, constitute a single example in Latin America of religious architecture out of wood. They represent a tradition initiated on the XVIIth and XVIIIth century by preachers itinerant Jesuits and testify to the successful fusion of the culture and the indigenous and European techniques, the perfect integration of its architecture in the landscape and the environment. Then, return on the continent to discover the area of the Lakes and its imposing landscapes, surrounded by its beautiful snow-covered volcanoes. Lakes, volcanoes and thermal baths are the key words of this second part.

Itinerary

Day 1: We will leave Puerto Montt heading towards Chiloe. On the ferry to the Island of Chiloe, we will have the opportunity to see some of the marine life indigenous to this part of the world. Once we land, we will pass through the small towns of Ancud and Castro and follow the shore of Lake Huilinco to a small coastal town called Cuaco. Accommodations include meal.

Day 2: In the morning, we head in the direction of Rahue (just a few kilometers away) where we will mee tou local guide, Pancho, and the horses. We will then go to the southern part of the island, an area rarely visited by tourists, where we will see our first forests and swamps that alternate with open savanna. We eat on a stony beach criss-crossed by paths strewn with fascinating fossils. We will make camp in an area called Quilan.

Day 3: Will will continue to “Tricolor” Beach for a picnic, and then head back north this time through the Arayanes Forrest. We will make camp in Quilan, again.

Day 4: After packing up our camp, we’ll head back to Punta Piluil, a beautiful place where you can observe a colony of sea lions. We will take advantage of this charming location with a snack before heading to Sra. Sonia’s for a late lunch who will help familiarize us with local customs and culture. Bed and dinner back in our Cuaco accommodations.

Day 5: After breakfast we head for the northern end of the Cole-Cole Park. We look forward to an incredible day taken at a steady pace on nearly 20 kms of white sandy beach overlooking awesome views of the coastline. At the end of the day we head back to Cucao for dinner and lodging.
Day 6: We leave Cucao early morning and take the mini van heading back to the mainland. On the way we’ll stop to visit some of the small towns and villages famous for their traditionally beautiful churches.  Lunch will be free this day and our journey ends once we arrive in Puerto Montt or Puerto Varas.
Day 7: We’ll meet early morning in Puerto Varas and head off to Lake Todos Los Santos in Petrohue.  There, a launch will take us across the lake to a place known as El Rincón where our horse excursion begins. We will discover the Vicente Perez Rosales National Park with its perfect Osorno Volcano and end the day with a well deserved thermal bath in the Callao Hot springs.  Dinner and lodging in shelter.
Day 8: We continue heading north to Lake Rupanco, stopping for a midday break near beautiful pond “El Queltro”. We’ll dine and spend the night in a cabin on the edge of Lake Rupanco.
Day 9: This will be a full day’s riding with unforgettable views of the three volcanoes that are aligned on the way; the Casablanca, Osorno y Puntiagudo Volcanoes. We’ll take refuge for the night at a cabin at the foot of the volcano.
Day 10: We go back to Lake Rupanco taking a different route.  We’ll cross thick forests and diverse terrain where you will be conscious of the hardiness and generosity of your rides; innate traits of the “criollo” breed of horses.  At night, back in the cabin, we will have a typical Chilean dinner.
Day 11: The morning will be left open to rest up and enjoy smoked salmon prepared by the locals at midday. In the afternoon we take a launch to El Bolso where our minivan awaits to take us back to Puerto Varas.  On the way we’ll stop for our last thermal bath at one of most intact hot springs by the edge of the lake. Our journey ends once we reach Puerto Montt or Puerto Varas.
Día 12: Last day is optional, trekking on the Osorno volcano, visit of the artisanal market of Angelmó or for most adventurous, rafting on Rio Petrohué (with supplement). End of the program.
